What Does Fluid In Mastoid Air Cell Mean In Brain Imaging?
Hi I was involved in a car accident and had a plate put in my neck. And also had had a disk fused 4 years earlier due to being hurt during work. I was just looking at my brain imaging and it says that in my T2 there is fluid within the inferior aspect of the right mastoid air cell . Why and what does it mean.
When the brain is scanned, the bone behind the ears is also visible. This is called the mastoids and have a role in hearing. This is part of the temporal bone and important vessels and nerves pass through cavities in this bone. This bone also contains air cells which help in hearing. When there is ear infection, some amount of fluid gets collected in these mastoid air cells. This is called mastoiditis and the finding of fluid on T2 describes this condition in you. There is a need for you to consult an ear nose throat doctor and get your ear checked for possible middle ear infection (otitis media). Any pus discharge from the ear must be evaluated and looked for in detail. This needs to be treated with antibiotics after confirmation. Also please keep your ears dry and do not allow water to enter when having bath. You can avoid going for swimming for some days till the ear is treated.
