What Does Excessive Phlegm Indicate?

Is excessive phlegm/mucus a symptom of herd? This seems to accompany the acid heartburn of a 96 year old whose been losing weight but is otherwise in fairly good health given that he has congestive heart failure and COPD. Could his mess being causing this? (Atenolol, furosemide, simvastatin, warfarin were his regimen but now includes music index, omeprazole and ranitidine). He s seen no consistent improvement since adding the latter two mess to his regimen. If the problem is his lower esophageal sphincter, how is that treated? Also, might this also be caused by a hotel hernia. He s been to an ENT who prescribed the latter two mesds recently after scoping his nose, throat, and performed a medium barium swallow. Thank you.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Excessive muccus in this case may be realted with COPD, from gastric problem(esophageal reflux, hiatal hernia, gastric ulcer).
In my opinion he should consult the gastroenterologist to perform a gastroscopy (stomach endoscopy).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
