What Does Discoloration Under The Big Toenail Indicate?

I have a discoloration under my big toenail that looks like blood. Fungus treatment did not work. It s just a small amount right in front of where the toenail begins. I have no pain - it just looks funny. Is it ok to put toenail polish over it? What happens if I do nothing about it - will it eventually grow out with the toenail. It hasn t moved in several months. Do I need to worry about it?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Because the spot has not moved for months this means it is related to the nail bed and not to the nail itself. Treatment for fungal infection will not help and even if you use polish will not be helpful as they don't reach the nail bed.
It is important to see a doctor and have a clear diagnosis of the spot. It is crucial to rule out melanoma as a possible cause as it is a tumor that needs proper attention.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
