What Does Blood In Stool Indicate?

My 40 year old brother has been experiencing bright red blood in stools. along with vomiting. He had a upper and lower scope preformed. 3 polyps were removed. Surgeon said his colon was the most red she had ever seen. Pain in mid abdomen, like a pulling sensation. Yesterday he had another bout with blood in stool and vomiting.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The redness of the colon that was on colonoscopy may indicate that it was inflamed. It can occur with different causes such as infection, trauma, inflammatory bowel disease. The two main types of inflammatory disease are- Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. The doctor may take a biopsy of the colon to see if either of these is present.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Michelle Gibson James
