What Does An Altered Sense Of Smell Indicate?

I sometimes get a weird cheese like smell up my nose, nobody else can smell it so I know it s not an aroma in the air or me that smells, I would liken the smell to parmesean chese, this time I have what appears to be a spot on my nostril but it hasn t broken the skin yet, could it be that, because the previous times I ve had no signs of a spot or zit.

Hello,

As per your query, you are experiencing an altered sense of smell which seems to be due to a nasal polyp, infection of paranasal sinuses and nerve dysfunction like an olfactory nerve.

I would suggest you maintain complete hygiene of the oral and nasal cavity. Do nasal rinses and take steam inhalation as well. You should consult ENT specialist once for proper examination.

The Doctor may order CT scan, nasal endoscopy, blood test, and physical examination and may prescribe antibiotics at least for ten days along with anti-inflammatory. The Doctor may also consider surgery or refer you to the neurologist for nerve defect.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
