What Does An Abnormal EMG Report Suggest?

I just had NCS and EMG done and the testing dr was surprised to see an abnormal EMG, what does that mean if the EMG appear abnormal? He also said I have mild carpel tunnel problem..can the abnormal EMG caused by neck problem? I had slip and fall 6 months ago, went thru few OT and PT therapies for torn ligament, neck, hip and wrist pain...pain is much better, wrist still swell a bit, still some numbness tingling on R wrist, thus the NCS and EMG tests...should I be concerned for abnormal EMG? Thank you for any input and advise or dx of problem?

Hello,

There is normally little electrical activity in a muscle while at rest. Needles insertion the can cause some electrical activity, but once the muscles quiet down, little electrical activity is detected.

When you flex a muscle, activity appears. Contraction of muscle increases electrical activity and a pattern can be seen. This pattern helps determine if the muscle is responding correctly.

In case of abnormal activity, muscle shows fibrillation and altered amplitude in the nerves there's is increased latency observed

It is possible with carpal tunnel syndrome or cubital tunnel syndrome or cervical spondylosis or radiculopathy etc.

Please consult your neuro-physician he will identify the lesion and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
