What Does An LDL Level Of 76 Indicate?

Hello. I recently had a physical and I want to get your take on my # s for cholesterol. HDL was 37 LDL was 76 Triglycerides 132, total 139. I kickbox for an hour everyday M-F and on weekends I am usually mowing and other yard work or working on renovating my home. I am very active. Welcome to HCM!
Thanks for posting your query.
Following are the fats that are detected in the blood and their normal values
Total cholesterol (Upto 200 mg/dl.
It represents the total cholesterol in the blood and includes the good and bad types.
High density cholesterol (HDL) Good cholesterol and should ideally be in the range of 40-59 mg/dl.
High levels of HDL are increased during exercise and useful because it decreases the risk of developing heart disease.

Low density cholesterol (LDL) - Bad cholesterol and if this is high, the person is at a risk of developing heart disease. Upto 100 mg/dl. is taken as normal.
Triglycerides (Amount of fat in the blood. The level of triglycerides may be raised if LDL has also increased. Upto 150 mg/dl. is normal.
Total cholesterol to HDL ratio - This is the total cholesterol divided by the value of HDL. A ratio of five indicates an average risk of heart disease.

Your calculated Total cholesterol to HDL ratio is 3.75.

In view of the above mentioned normal lipid profile your lipid profile level is within the normal range and well controlled.
You are advised to continue the same type of physical acitivity.
Best regards!

Pathologist and Microbiologist Dr. Shailja Puri's  Response
Hello and welcome to HCM,
The interpretation of test results is as follows:
Total cholesterol should be below 200 mg/dl. Your value is 139 mg/dl and this is within normal limits.
LDL cholesterol should be below 100 mg/dl so your value of 76 is within normal range.
HDL cholesterol should be above 40 and preferably above 60 mg/dl so your value of 37 is on lower side.
Triglyceride levels should be below 150 mg/dl so value of 132 is within range.
Thus all your parameters are good.
Only the HDL needs to be increased.
HDL can be increased by increasing the intake of omega 3 fatty acids in diet.
Foods rich in omega 3 fatty acids are fish, walnut, flaxseeds etc.

Thanks and take care
