What Does A Red Pimple On The Chest Indicate?

Hello, I have what appears to be a pimple on my chest. It is red and slightly swollen. The swollen area isabout 2 inches in diameter. In the center there is what looks like a pimple and the swollen area hurts to the touch and is pretty sensitive. This seems to have formed overnight and its been about two days. I don t know if it is just a pimple or something serious, and if it is just a pimple how can I treat it? -Kyle

It may be a boil only Kyle.If you were my patient I would try a course of Augmentin plus Paracetamol for 5 days. If it's still there it may be an infection deeper than the chest wall . If it is in the centre or midline, I would still give a course of Augmentin and Paracetamol. If it is on one side of the center, I will prefer to take a plain Postero anterior X Ray of Chest. Sometimes a pneumonia or some chronic infection of lungs can present with a pus filled cavity inside and a protrusion on chest wall looking like the one on your chest wall. In case of Pulmonary or the pleural[the sac enclosing the lungs] infections it is called Empyema Necessitans.
There is nothing to worry. There is treatment for all the above infections. And we have to investigate for the cause for correct treatment.
