What Does A Painful Red Streak From The Arm To The Armpit Indicate?

my grand daughter was into a dr today, she has a red streak up her arm into her armpit, she states it is getting more red and hurts. It looks as though she had some kind of bite on her thumb. She was given an antibiotic, amoxicillion 125mg. she is 15. I am very worried about the red streak up her arm!! They didn't take a blood test or anything.
I think I should take her somewhere else??

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Does she have fever, poor appetite, vomiting, or lethargy? Any pus bumps? What you are describing sounds like ascending lymphangitis which is a red streaking of the skin along with involvement of the lymph vessels below the skin.

It is an infection due to the Strep germ and can be caused by a Staph germ as well. It begins at the distal end of an extremity and goes up the arm or leg. As you describe it usually begins from an insect bite or other break in the skin.

Amoxicillin is good against Strep but probably not for Staph. From what you tell me your granddaughter says, it is not getting better. She needs to be re-evaluated by a doctor as soon as possible.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
