What Does A Painful Lump Below The Middle Finger Indicate?

I have had a fairly painful lump below the middle finger on my right hand for two weeks or so. It is a bit smaller than a dime. It is located between the beginning of the finger and what is thought of as the palm. It is not visible but can be felt below the skin. It is sensitive to the touch but does not affect use of the fingers or hand at this point.
