Husband-age 56 has large bump, length of my hand on hs back butt side. he is a diabetic & on bloodd thinner meds. he says its just boil, but its too large and it feels somewhat hard & some area soft. If this breaks open could he bleed rather alot or not sure if it is full of infection, like a cyst. he is also on meds for his pace maker & he seems to think it will pop & be over. having trouble sitting down & says his whole body aches. thx jackie
Short answer: Yes, he needs to get himself to a doctor
Long answer: Hi there,
It sounds as though the swelling is quite sore and he is rather unwell. Since he is diabetic, it could be something called a carbuncle, which is basically an infection much like a boil but has many points to it. It doesn't drain well on its own as it has separate sections, and him being a diabetic will make him less likely to be able to fight the infection on his own. He needs to go down to your local doctor's and have it removed.
Please be careful with his sugar levels if you have a home monitor, as infections like these usually make the sugar levels go really high.
Hope this helps.
Regards, Dr. Teh
