What Does PSA Level Of 18 Indicate?

Hello, my dad had prostate cancer 5 years ago and was cleared 4 years ,he also has parkinsons and he was busy getting DBS and never went to get blood work done so recently he did and his PSA level is 184. how bad is this? he is going for a bone scan tomorrow ,he fell and broke his hip a 3 weeks ago.

Prostate cancer blood work should be done regularly. It will help to know the last PSA value when he was cleared of cancer. This is important because from it we can calculate the PSA velocity which indicates the rate of rise in PSA over intervals of months and years. The PSA doubling time is important. If the PSA levels have doubled over 18 months then he must be investigated for recurrent cancer. Even the amount of free PSA is to be measured. If he has a broken hip then even a urinary or prostate infection can cause raised PSA levels. This is also to be considered when interpreting the PSA values.
