What Does MRI Showing Hyperintense Mass Consistent With Primary Glial Neoplasm Mean?

hi docotor I want someone to interrupt the result of my mom s MRI TECHNIQUE: Multiple sequences through the brain were acquired at 1.5 Tesla. CONTRAST MEDIA: Intravenous gadolinium chelate was administered for post-contrast imaging. FINDINGS: Centrally enhancing, somewhat well-circumscribed, cortically-based, expansile right antero-medial frontal lobe mass measuring 3.0 x 1.6 x 2.7 cm (AP by lateral by craniocaudal). There is no evidence of calcification or susceptibility artifact within the mass effect. The enhancing central portions show reduced diffusion, likely from high cellularity. No other focus of intracranial suspicious enhancement. No hydrocephalus, or midline shift. Few scattered foci of T2/FLAIR signal hyperintensity in the subcortical, deep and periventricular white matter which are nonspecific but most likely consequence of chronic senescent small vessel ischemic disease. Incidentally found tortuous right vertebral artery. IMPRESSION: 1. Centrally enhancing, FLAIR hyperintense, cortically based right antero-medial frontal lobe mass, measuring 3 x 1.6 x 2.7 cm, is most consistent with a primary glial neoplasm (such as astrocytic glial tumor or oligodendroglioma). 2. No imaging evidence to suggest vascular dementia. Thanks.

Hi,

Interpretations: In the right frontal lobe (which is the front right side of the brain) an almost spherical (round) mass measuring 3 cm in diameter was found. It is the impression of the radiologist, that this could be a tumor (cancer). The radiologist suggests two different types of cancer 1) Atrocytic Glial cell tumor or 2) Oligodendroglioma.

Besides this, there is also evidence to suggest that your mother has narrowed blood vessels in her brain, which has caused ischemia (blood loss and cell death) to small areas of her brain. This is a common find in elderly patients, and is not in and of itself requiring treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Maria Riechel-Sarup, General & Family Physician
