What Do These Genetic Testing Results Indicate?

Hi my name is Bernadette, I had BRCA1 and BRCA2 testing because of the amount of people in my family that has died from cancer and is still battling cancer. There are many forms of cancer in my family. So my results came back negative for family mutations, which they told me that doesn t mean it can t appear later on in life. But they found that I fell in a 17% of ovarian cancer. They said the numbers for ovarian cancer are 7% - 19%. The Dr. Suggested I start taking a chemo therapy medication called Tamoxofen for 5 yrs. I am 56 yrs. old. I am not expecting to have anymore children not only because of my age, but because I have no uterus. Can you please explain what it means to have a positive 17% out of a 7-19%?

Hi,

Based upon the genetic test report, it suggests that, out of 100 women at risk for developing ovarian cancer, 7 to 19 women will develop ovarian cancer. Based upon your genetic test results, it implies, out of 100 women who have genes like yourself, 17 women develop ovarian cancer.

Usually if the chances are more than 10%, it is considered as high risk and requires close monitoring or options such as this tablet Tamoxifen.
