What Do Pregnancy Symptoms Post Skipping One Dose Of Contraceptive Pill Mean?

hi, I ve been on the contraceptive pill for years, I forgot my to take my pill on the sunday, so took the 2 on the Monday, slept with my boyfriend twice, went to take my pill on the Tuesday morning and my mom had chucked them away, I went to the chemist after work around 7 to get the morning after pill and I ve been back on the pill ever since, am I pregnant? I felt sick and hot all day on Saturday and was sick in the afternoon ,I ve been tired, been having hot flushes, since and I still feel really sick. my stomach feels all tight and it s painful to touch, my back aches, my ears have been popping, been peeing more often even in the night and these all all symptoms for early pregnancy, I took 2 tests today and they ve come back negative.. but is it because I ve taken them too early? is there any chance I may be pregnant?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and welcome.

An irregularity in taking the pills on time can result in the onset of various symptoms that can mimic pregnancy, but these are more likely to be due to a hormonal imbalance.

If at all you have taken all the pills each day without missing them since the sexual contact, and the only issue is the irregularity with time, then pregnancy may be unlikely. I would strongly recommend the use of condoms the next time you are aware about recent or ongoing irregularities in taking the pill on time.

Pregnancy will have to be ruled out using an early morning urine sample at least 2 weeks from the sexual contact or on or after the second day of a missed period.

Best wishes.
