What Do My Ultrasound Results Indicate?

Hi Doctor, My LMP was on Oct 9/15 and I have irregular periods. I tested positive on Nov 21/15 and had my first scan on Dec 1/15.The scan showed a gestational sac of 8mm, a yolk sac and the doctor said there was a foetal pole too without cardiac activity and she dated me to 5 weeks and 5 days. I had a repeat scan on Dec 8/15 where the foetal pole size was reduced to 1.6mm and the doc dated me to just 5 weeks and 2 days. Doctor said either the baby is not growing well or the previous scan is not proper because in the first scan report the measurement for crl was taken across the yolk sac. Also I could not see the differentiate the foetal pole from the yolk sac which I could do in the second scan. Kindly advice am I not progressing well?

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

The scan done on Dec 01 2015 showed a fetal pole at 5 weeks 5 days without cardiac activity. This is acceptable and cardiac activity develops in 6 to 7 weeks.

The next scan on Dec 08 2015 showed a fetal pole measuring 1.6 mm. This corresponds with pregnancy of 5 weeks 2 days.

In the above situations, the second scan was done early and you should have waited 15 days to know the exact nature of the pregnancy.

There is difficulty in correlating the 2 scans because in one the gestational sac is measured and the other one shows CRL. The important thing to know is whether the next scan showed any fetal cardiac activity. It is early to pick up any fetal cardiac activity in 5 weeks scan and therefore I suggest that you should get a scan done now and this will be a good time to know the size of pregnancy. In my opinion you are likely to be having a normal pregnancy going by the earlier scan. Please do not worry.
