What Do Dark Patches On Roof Of Mouth Indicate?

I have 5/6 small dark patches on the roof of my mouth, white spots on the dangly thing as well as spots on either side of that and my cheeks also are yellowy/red. My tongue has a couple of spots on them and the rest is greedy/orangey. I m quite worried about this as I ve been self diagnosing on the Internet which is silly. Should I be worried? Do you know what it could be at all?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to Health Care Magic Team.

Understanding your concern.

Dark patches on the roof of mouth and other areas of mouth are a condition which could be because of excessive melanin secretion in body and this is very normal occurrence. These patches are called oral melanotic macules.

Probable chances are there that you would have amalgam filling in your mouth due to which such tattoos form on roof of mouth known as amalgam tattoo.

But if these pigments becoming red and causing difficulty in swallowing, eating and causing any itchy and burning sensation then it could be a condition which you need to worry about. It could be because of systemic conditions then.

You should visit your nearby dentist just to make sure that these areas are not because of any serious mouth pathology rather just because of hyper pigmentation. Dentist will take a sample from dark pigmented area and will do biopsy for the same to find exact diagnosis and then treatment can be done accordingly.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
