What Do Bruises On The Chest After An Open Heart Surgery Indicate?

my husband just had a stroke and then open heart surgery to remove a blood clot from his aortic valve and replace it with a mechanical valve. I just noticed some patches of bruises on his left side in 3 about 2 inch areas. Is this something to be concerned about?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

* According to my long surgical experience, the presence of bruises on chest if a new appearance not particularly over the wound then is of immense concern.
* There might be underlying coagulation alteration of parameters as the patient is usually on blood thinner.
* I recommend to immediately consult his surgeon for further care.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
