Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) is an important enzyme in one of the pathways occuring in Red Blood Cells (RBCs). It is involved in production of a substance called NADPH, which in turn helps to counter
oxidative stress experienced by the membranes of RBCs, preventing its destruction by maintaining membrane integrity.
Thus, G6PD is an enzyme that helps the red blood cells to function normally by preventing its destruction prematurely.
The enzyme deficiency is known to cause
hemolysis (destruction of RBCs).
Certain precautions that needs to be taken in persons with
G6PD deficiency include:
1. Avoiding drugs like
Acetylsalicylic acid (Aspirin),
Vitamin C, Sulpha drugs, Antimalarial drugs
2. Avoid to come in close contact with mothballs (naphthalene).
3. Diet should not contain fava beans. Also intake of red wine, all beans, blueberries, soya products, tonic water and camphor needs to be avoided.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
