What Could The Purple Dot On Toe Of A Child Be?

my son is 8 yr old. he has a small blackish purple dot on the bottom of his 4th toe. This little spot used to be purple and it would come and go. Now, it turned dark, almost black and is hard to the touch and is not going away. What could this be?
