Hello. Thanks for asking form HCM.
I can understand your concern. The calcification is usually best appreciated on CT head not MRI brain. Now that after getting MRI brain done, they are suspecting something else, it could be lesion with calcification like
: Vascular lesion - Calcification in brain vessel like
atherosclerosis, aneurysm calcification, artery-venous malformation. It can be further confirmed by
angiography. Treatment will be decided after report
: Mass lesion - It is either brain parenchymal mass lesion like tumor (
oligodendroglioma, DNET, gangliocytoma,
ependymoma) or outside brain parenchyma (
meningioma, bony mass like osteoma/fibrous dysplasia).
Don't think much about above mentioned names. You can ask your doctor about it and ask him about above mentioned tumor.
: Degenerative changes - With age, calcification can occur in some areas of brain like
pineal gland, choroid plexus,
basal ganglia. They are commonly found in persons above 40 years age.
: Few other old insults to brain can cause calcification like old infection (parasitic/tubercular), trauma and bleed. They are very small calcification and asymptomatic.
I have provided you list of most common cause of calcification. You can discuss it with your doctor and confirm diagnosis. Further treatment will be decided after confirming diagnosis.
Hope it will help you. Thanks.
You can also ask about management of your disease by asking another question, after confirming diagnosis with your doctor.
Take care.
