What Could The CBC Count In The Lab Report Below Imply?

Yes - what might the following imply: CBC w/differential results: Out of ranges only: wbc - 12.6, rbc 5.4, HCT - 50.5, and absolute lymphocytes - 3920. Others that are within range but at the end of the range: Hemogoblin-16.2, RDW-14.4 and absolute Neutrophils-7776. I have had breast cancer, lumpectomy and radiation (2011 - NOT HAD MY FOLLOW UP FOR >2YRS, I have arthritis in my hips, knees and feet, with one hip replacement. I just had a MRI on my knee with a lateral meniscus tear, effusion and something else. I thought it might be a sarcoma - dumb right. I also had a hip steroid injection ~ a month ago followed by a 102 temp that only last a day. One more thing, when I had the hip replacement I got a MRSA and was in ICU for about a week and had a pic line for daily antibiotic treatments ~ 2 months?. I was also worried the injection may have disrupted the staph infection - I was told that it can remain at bay. Age 56, female. So WDYT?

The white blood cell count is suggestive of an infection. Is this report the latest one ? White cell counts rise during an infection and fall within range as the process resolves. I would suggest a Peripheral blood smear test and a CRP ( C-Reactive protein). Again such tests are not necessary if your counts are back to normal on repeat analysis . A peripheral blood smear may have been done at your hospital. If this tests says that the morphology of the cells in your blood is unremarkable ,then thats OK. What we generally do when we see some abnormalities on CBC especially if they are persistent is to do a peripheral blood smear. A peripheral blood smear is not an automated test as it has to be read and interpreted by a pathologist. When tests are done on hospitalized patients some parameters are off the mark . If they are persistently high or low on repeat analysis then please consult a hematologist. These are just general guidelines. The best solution is to talk to your current treating physician about your worries as he/she has all the information regarding your current medical condition. Warmest regards.
