What Could Recurring Stasis Ulcers Causing Painful, Red, Swollen Scabs Indicate?

Hi, My husband was diagnosed with stasis ulcers. and they regularly come up, painful scabs. treatment with 2% Mupopirocin would heal these ulcers /scabs quickly before. A week ago these scabs appeared again. This time even with treatment with Mupirocin ointment religiously , the lesions are not improving , the areas around the scabs are red and swollen. Augmetin was given orally, but it seems very little is happening. should we try Levaquin or Keflex instead? Please advise. Thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Stasis ulcers are due collection of fluid in the dependent area particularly in lower limbs in as prolonged standing or in the back in the bedridden persons. The cause should be treated first to prevent recurrence of the ulcers. In long standing persons, stockings are advised. Obese people advised to lose weight and to avoid prolonged standing.

In bedridden patients, use water bed to prevent bed sores. Topical antibiotics should be used in caution which may become resistant on improper usage. Consult the Doctor before using the topical antibiotics. Infected wounds should be cleaned properly prior to antibiotics. Sterile dressings are advised.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
