What Could Pain And Numbness In Ear Suggest?

Hi, Last night I fell asleep in a chair upright and my head flopped over to left side so when I woke up my neck hurt and was stiff, it soon wore off and went to bed. Now this morning my left ear (outside) around the ear and lobe are numb I can feel it just but its red and feels quite hot. My right ear is fine and have no other aches or pains anywhere?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Falling asleep in a chair and til of neck throughout can cause lots of problems.
The muscles of neck have gone into spasm causing nerve pinching effect and thus the numbness.
Other explanation to your symptoms are as follows:
Somehow there would have been pressure on the affected ear causing inflammation and thus redness and numbness.
I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Consul your Doctor for clinical evaluation and to know the cause of symptoms as discussed above so that symptomatic treatment as per the cause can be started. This can be in the form of an anti-inflammatory medicines, muscle relaxant if required. These medicines should help for redness and oral steroid will be started if required.
Take rest and never sleep in chair or in such positions that the problem recurs.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
