What Could Cause Raise In Heart Beat?

My heart is always beating very fast, even when I am at rest or siting down. Sometimes it hurts quite a bit, and I feel faint. I have told my parents, but they don t seem to care one bit. I almost fainted at school as well. I m 12, and I am quite worried. Any idea why this is? Is it serious? Thank you

Cardiologist 's  Response
Dear young patient,

My best suggestion would be to approach the school nurse or the gym teacher, as they may be able to help your parents understand the need for further evaluation. There are abnormal rhythms of the heart even in young people, usually coming from the upper chambers, benign, but bothersome. You may need to wear a monitor called Holter for 1 day to see what the fast beating is about.

Hope that helps wish you the best,
