What Could Cause Ketacidosis And Vomiting In A Non-diabetic Child?

Three days ago my cousin was fine but then a sudden onset of pain and vomiting has sent him to the ER. He is now in a children s hospital and the GI specialist they sent him can not find the cause of his problems. At this point besides pain and vomiting, his digestive tract has now slowed and he can no longer pass food or liquids. They discovered ketacidosis but he IS NOT diabetic. They ruled it out after tests. After many tests they can not find the reason his digestive tract has stopped. His liver and kidneys are fine. Yesterday he had finally gotten sleep and relief, even able to eat. But then last night he reverted back to vomiting up everything he ate. Now they have a central line in and started him on metoclopramide. If he is not diabetic what could cause ketoacidosis and his digestive tract to stop working with severe vomiting? Whatever it is, they can not find it on his tests!

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted your history about your cousin about developing ketoacidosis in spite that he is not a diabetic, started as sudden pain in abdomen and vomiting, sent to ER and thence to the children's hospital, liver and kidney function are normal; after getting alright for a few days, he has started vomiting and no cause can be found. Now started on Metoclopramide.
Diabetes is one of the major reasons for ketoacidosis.
Another reasons are: Infection and such conditions that increases the acidosis of the blood and the tissues.
Since he is admitted, do not worry as the Doctors would find the reasons and more important is the proper treatment to come out of the present problems.
