What Could Cause Black/dark Mucous Noticed In Spit?

After eating I experience a blackish phlegm thick like mucus i spit up. This has been occurring for nearly a year now. Also notice this in the morning after awakening. No pain, no vomiting, no wieght loss problems. I DO thou have GERD and am taking Nexium. what is this black stuff. I hardly smoke, maby once in a while say about once a week a cig or two.

Thanks for your query.
Noted the history blackish phlegm after eating for a year or so.
No pain, vomiting, weight loss. Known GERD taking Nexium.
I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Send the sample of the phlegm for microscopy, culture and sensitivity for AFB that is acid fast bacteria and so on.
Also get X-ray of the chest.
ENT Surgeon's opinion, examination and endoscopy.
This will give the idea about the possible cause and the nature why is the phlegm coming and from where.
Upper GI Endoscopy as you have GERD.
Get treated according to the findings so that you get a cure.
