What Could Be The Visible Blue Vein Near Bottom Lip?

My 14 year old daughter has what looks like a shallow vein near her bottom lip and has been there since birth. Its always "blue" in color and will become more prominent when shes cold or tips her head down. what could this be and who should she see to take care of it?

Hello,

I can understand your concern. The condition you have described for your daughter is called Telangiectasia. It is a presence of dilated or broken blood vessel. It can be present since birth or can develop later in life. Your daughter has it since birth.

If there is just this one vessel and no other problem or abnormality anywhere in the body, it can be considered as a developmental abnormality and can be accepted as it is not harmful to health. For cosmetic concerns, laser treatment can be done to remove the mark.

However, this can be part of a syndrome or systemic condition that you may not be aware of. Prominence of this vessel during cold and stress indicates Raynaud's Phenomenon which can be part of a bier syndrome called CREST.

Thus, just to rule out any such problem, I would advise you to have one consultation with the pediatrician who can examine your daughter closely for presence of any other sign or symptom that may not seem related to this condition but might be a part of some syndrome.

I hope this information guides you well. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. Take care.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
