What Could Be The Reason For Persistent Cough With Mucus?

I have had a fairly persistent cough for about 9 months, sometimes with quite a bit of mucus. I have taken a lot of medications for it under a doctor s supervision, but have had little relief. I do not wake up during the night coughing but am concerned about COPD. I smoked for about 20 years, but quit 25 years ago. What do you think I might have?

Pulmonologist 's  Response
Thanks for your question on HCM.
I think possibility of COPD ( Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease ) is high.
You have many features suggestive of COPD. Like
1. History of smoking.
2. Long duration of symptoms
3. Cough with expectoration.
So I advice you to consult pulmonologist and get done
1. Chest x ray
2. PFT ( Pulmonary Function Test ).
PFT will not only diagnose COPD but also tell you about severity of the disease.
And treatment is COPD is based on severity only.
So better to consult pulmonologist and discuss all these.
