What Could Be The Reason For Having Abdominal Pain And Fever?

My 20 year old son had an appendectomy 2 weeks ago today. The appendix did not burst and two days he spiked a fever of 102.4 and wasn't eating a lot and complained of lower abdominal pain. The doctor said there is some inflammation and prescribed Cirpoflaxin and Metronidavole to be taken after he finishes the 2000 milligrams of augmentin. They also want to see him in a month to make sure no fluids need to be drained. They seem to be downplaying this and I want to know what has caused this.

Hi ! Good evening. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.

Getting spikes of fever after two weeks of appendectomy implies some kind of secondary infection. The frequent culprits are the appendectomy wound itself, or a pocket of infected pus surrounded by the nearby intestines. Sometimes in very early stages of infection, it might be managed by antibiotics and anti inflammatory, but not infrequently one might have to drain the abscess either in the wound or otherwise.

If I were your treating doctor, I would do a complete blood count, a urine routine and microscopic test, and an ultrasound abdomen if need be to see if there is any collection. I would also follow up the patient closely and review him more frequently for timely intervention. Further management would depend on the physical findings and the investigation reports.

Therefore, if the pain increases, and your son becomes more uncomfortable, please do not hesitate to get him reviewed in between by the treating doctor.

I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts.
Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. Wishing you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
