What Could Attacks Of Diarrhea, Vomiting, Dizziness And Headache Indicate?

My mom is 68 and has been having sever diarrhea and vomiting attacks that end her in the emergency room. She had an attack today, Monday, and 3 weeks ago. Several in the past year, which always sends her to the emergency room either by ambulance or my stepfather taking her in. Other symptoms include extreme weakness, dizzy, headache. The physicians have done numerous tests and aren t coming up with anything. On one visit the doctor said there was definitely something metabolic going on, but I don t know what that means. Any ideas?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Diarrhea and vomiting commonly occur due to gastrointestinal condition, such as IBS, stomach ulcers, acid reflux, and GERD. She should take boiled food for a couple of days, food that is easily digestible. she should avoid taking anything that is raw. Let her stay away from spicy oily food, trans fat, full fat dairy, cheese, etc. She can take boiled lean meat, steamed fish. Well cooked whole grains. She should avoid greasy and sugary foods that can irritate stomach and cause diarrhea and vomiting.

She should get all liver function tests done. Take liver tonics and digestives for better metabolism. Get imaging tests done to detect any liver enlargement. Dizziness and headache is due to dehydration, low BP, hypoglycemia, etc. You should keep her well hydrated. Give her home made nutritional diet so that her vitals are normal. Get her treated at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
