What Causes Weird Taste In The Mouth?

My husband had a 4 way heart by pass in March of 2016, he also had a stroke, he was intubated for about 4 days. He has a very terrible taste in his mouth that will not go away. I have searched the side effects of all his medicine that he now takes. Only one (Amiodarone) list taste problems as a side effect. Is there any other reason he may be experiencing this problem. He is not able to eat as normal due to this very bad taste in his mouth.

Hello,

I can understand your concern. It is true that some medicines can alter the taste sensation in the mouth. In addition, as he might be taking many medications for the health issues, it is possible that he is getting acidity or heartburn making the acid to regurgitate in mouth causing this bad taste.

To improve taste sensation, if he is not taking any antacid, antacid such as Ranitidine Hydrochloride 150 mg (Zinetac 150) can be added to his medicines twice a day. In addition, he can take Digene syrup 10 ml twice a day after meals and before bedtime.

As the medicines that are causing altered taste sensation as side effect will stop, the effect will also subside and he will be able to taste normally. He can such on sugarless candies and try different condiments for temporary relief of the problem. If the problem is too severe, the prescribing doctor can be consulted for change in molecule of the medication or alterations in the dosage.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. I wish your husband feels better soon.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
