What Causes Weight Gain In The Upper Abdomen And Depression?

I am a 70 year old female with these symptoms: recent weight gain in upper abdomen, dry scaly skin, loss of body hair (except on my head), depression and irritability. My mother had thyroid problems. My recent tsh is 146. My doctor says I do not have hypothyroidism, but I believe I do. What is your opinion, please.

Hello Dear. The normal range of TSH levels is 0.4 to 4.0 milli-international units per liter. If you’re already being treated for a thyroid disorder, the normal range is 0.5 to 3.0 milli-international units per liter.

Here you have not specified the exact units of your thyroid hormone levels. Is it 146 mili-int units or micro-int units. If its mili then TSH is high and you are probably having hypothyroidism. If its micro-int then its normal.

Hypothyroidism does cause depression. Treating the cause will help.
