What Causes Weight Gain And Acid Reflux After Taking Armour Thyroid?

I was on armour thyroid as a hormonal drug, I moved away and got a new dr who tested me and said I did not need it as my levels fall in the normal range. When I was taking it I felt better. Since then I have gained weight, had more acid reflex, been more constipated or diarrhea, and had higher BP. I have noticed the difference, yet my tests still fall in the accepted range. Is there something that can be taken in place of this that will do the same thing that does not need a prescription?

I understand your concern. The symptoms you refer after stopping armour thyroid are compatible with a low functioning thyroid. The fact that you felt better while on medication also points to the fact that your thyroid is low functioning.

I recommend you repeat the thyroid tests once more. If they confirm a low thyroid, then you will need to be on a hormone replacement medication for a long time. Unfortunately, there is no over the counter thyroid hormone replacement medication.

If the tests come back normal again, then you need a more thorough check up in order to investigate the underlying cause for your current symptoms.
