What Causes Weakness On The Right Side Of The Body With Urinary Incontinence?

Hi, My name is Sherry. My mother had a small stroke in November 2013 and in January 2014 both times was hospitalized for 3 days, then came back home with no difficulties. In April 2014 my mom was found unconscious and 911 was called she was admitted in the hospital, the 2nd day a MRI was done, my father, sister and I was taken in an office with the Neurologist and shown images of my mom s brain. We was told she had a major stroke in the bottom of her brain, there was nothing that could be done, her pupils was unequally dilated and we needed to decide what we wanted to do. She had less than 48 hours to live so be prepared for her passing. She came awake and alert. She was in the hospital 2 weeks then in a nursing home for 100 days then can home to her husband. My father and I having been taking care of her at home since August 2014. This past June 2nd 2016 she had an appointment with a neurologist and after an hour of conversation about my mother my dad and I was told that she didn t have a major stroke in April 2014. That MRI s only showed her 2 small strokes and a few TIA s. The Neurologist couldn t explain her condition. She has right sided weekness, not able to walk or stand on her own, can t use her right hand or arm like she use to, not able to speak, not able to sit up straight, can t dress herself and is incontinent and wears diapers, she doesn t know when she has to go. So after being told she will die in less than 48 hours due to this major stroke she had in April 2014 she is still with us 2 years and 2 months later and didn t even have this major stroke. We are confused, what is wrong and what caused her weekness and unable to take care of herself like she use to since she didn t have a major stroke. January 2016 till June 2016 she has presented stroke like symptoms, was taken to the hospital and had been admitted 4 times out of the 5 she had went. The doctors in the ER thought she was having a stroke also till the MRI was done and showed she didn t. We was told generalized weekness one time, mental status another time, urinary tract infection, then this last time a week ago it was toxic metabolic encephalopathy. Are they just guessing cause they don t know? Do you have any ideas what could be going on? I m very concerned, upset, stressed with my mothers condition. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

* As per my clinical experience, the weakness on left side of the body with urinary incontinence indicates cerebrovascular accident affecting right side of the brain.

An MRI of the brain is the most needy thing and if you have available report of the same, kindly share with me in follow up conversation please so that I can discuss further regarding the best possible approach.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
