What Causes Weakness In Muscle Long After Recovering From A Dislocated Shoulder?

Hello, Arround 4 years ago (when I was 15 years old), I broke and dislocated my right shoulder. I had a surgery after a couple of days, and there are absolutely no problems with the movement of my shoulder. But, the deltoid (where the scar is) is quite a lot smaller than my left shoulder s and also a lot weaker (my whole right arm is considerably weaker). For example, I do weight lifting. On the last sets (let s say the fourth and some times the third aswell) I can do 8 reps with the left, like on the first and second set, but with the right arm on the last sets, with the same weight, I can hardly do 3-4. What should I do in order to strengthen my right arm and bring it to the same strength level with my left arm? I would really appreciate any help. Thank you very much, Tasos Notes: I am left handed, male, 19 years of age, 188cm height, 71kg weight.

Hello,

Post dislocation surgery, shoulder muscles strengthening exercises are very important and help in regaining the strength just as the unaffected one. The following are steps in phase 4 of physical therapy that help you to regain the power in the affected shoulder. Your physical therapist will instruct you in activity-specific exercises to meet your needs.

For certain athletes, this may include throwing and catching drills. For others, it may include practice in lifting heavier items onto shelves or instruction in raking, shoveling, or housework. Please do consult your physical therapist before you start lifting heavy weights with the affected shoulder. Shoulder muscles strengthening exercises are to be practiced daily.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
