What Causes Vomiting While On Narcotic Pain Relief Medication?

Hi. Our 86 yr old mother has degenerative lumbar 1, 2 and 3 so far. Pain radiating down her Rt hip to knee which she s been immobilized since 4 months ago. Pseudo gout set in her knees about the same team which cortisone shots in each knee helped subside the pain in knees only temporarily. Kt knee had total knee replacement in 2006 and Rt knee apparently is not bad enough for a replacement. Anyhow the narcartics she s on is hydromorphi 1 fast act and 1 slow release and tramacet fast act an slow release she s been vomitting ever since she s been on these so had tramacet switch to dilaudid and still vomits. Worried about length of time 4 months of vomitting, usually upon movement or after small meals that she eats. At 1st just wanted her pain managed?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Sorry to hear about her problem. Your concern is very right, vomiting which lasts for 4 months needs evaluation. While pain relief is important, and narcotics can cause vomiting, but it generally does not last this much.

It's also important to note that vomiting with narcotics is generally not after food. Vomiting after food may indicate some stomach problem.

So I understand it's very important that she is seen and assessed by a gastroenterologist for her vomiting.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
