Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 10 1/2 month old recently started with loose grayish colored stool 3-4 times/day, and is not eating as well as usual. We recently weaned from breastfeeding. He has all of a sudden stopped wanting oatmeal/rice cereal that he previously was getting three times a day. When he will take it, he vomits the entire meal. The only thing we can get him to keep down is some formula and yogurt.
Grayish colored stools can occur due to obstruction in the flow of bile. But it can also occur due to change in food habits. I would not suggest stopping breast milk before 1 year of age provided that there is adequate flow. In case of inadequacy, the situation is different and there is no other way out. Semi solids need to be given. But if the child is vomiting it out, I think that you should get a medical consultation in order to assess for conditions like liver pathology or intestinal obstruction that could cause such vomiting and gray stools. In the meantime, also ive ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution) and plenty of other fluids. It comes in ready made form or may be prepared by mixing a full sachet in the designated amount of water.
