Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My grandson started taking omnicef last night. He is nine months old and has only taken one dose so far. This evening he threw up....a lot according to my daughter. About 5 oz. Can this be a side effect since it was 24 hours ago when he took it or is it more likely a bug? They are worried about giving him the next dose if it is an allergic reaction. But also worried about not giving it to him since they started the medication. Would it hurt to wait 12 hours until they can get hold of the doctor in the morning?
Allergic reactions to medication would normally present with skin rash and itching. If he does have a rash that is itching him then he would need to stop taking the medication as a precaution.
GI upset is a possible side effect of antibiotics but is not considered an allergic reaction in most persons.
They can wait the few hours and contact his doctor but if they notice any signs or symptoms that are worrying, then he would need to be seen.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James,
