What Causes Vocal Cord Problems?

I ve been told I have vocal chord disfunction and have reactions to colognes, any scented household products, etc., causing some fairly major breathing problems when I come in contact with these. Also, humidity triggers it as well. They tell me my lungs are excellent, and I don t have what is considered regular asthma. My question is, Are my bronchial tubes involved in this breathing struggle of vocal chord disfunction ? After a bad episode, I find that my chest is very sore to the touch in that area afterwards and can hurt for quite a while.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

VCD(vocal cord dysfunction) is sometimes confused with asthma because some of the symptoms are similar. In asthma, the airways (bronchial tubes) tighten, making breathing difficult. With VCD, the vocal cord muscles tighten, which also makes breathing difficult. Unlike asthma, VCD is not an allergic response starting in the immune system. Diagnosing VCD can be challenging. The history of breathing difficulties when taking in a breath, having a hoarse voice or experiencing voice changes may be very helpful to discuss with your allergist / immunologist. Treatment for VCD typically involves activities that relax the throat muscles including:

• Speech therapy
• Deep breathing techniques.

If you suffer from asthma, allergies or GERD, managing these conditions will help in treating VCD. Please, consult your ENT specialist he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
