What Causes Vocal Cord Damage?

I just got my tonsillectomy today and I m an extremely avid singer. They said there would be a possibility of vical cord damage and i dont know what I would do if I couldn t sing again. How would I know if they are damaged or if I ll be able to sing again? How long until it would be able to be determined? Thank you :)

Vocal cord damage is a possibility if there are problems inserting a tube for giving anesthesia; initially the throat may remain sore for a few days so avoid straining your voice and singing for at least a week following the surgery. Do tincture benzoin steam inhalations daily.
Unless there has been significant damage, minor issues generally resolve in a week or ten days.
