What Causes Vertigo After Watching 3D Movies?

I am a 44yr old female. I have had problems with 3D movies and strobe lights. my head will hurt and my balance is thrown way off especially after 3D movies. I didn t know the lights on my Christmas tree were shimmering lights (softly blinking), These lights have thrown me off, Why? I also have a bad headache from them.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

If you have some eye issue like Convergence problem, myopia, hyperopia, etc then after watching 3D movies you may experience symptoms like vertigo, nausea or headache. If you are interested in 3D movies visit an eye specialist & get your eyes checked so that you can get appropriate special glasses (to reduce eye stress due to glare & tiredness) which will keep your eyes protected while you enjoy the movie. These are the side effects much similar to those in people riding a roller coaster, its due to visual discomfort commonly in those susceptible to visual-vestibular system resulting in nausea, headache, Oculomotor, vertigo & disorientation. Don't worry take an optometric visit & get comfortable.
