What Causes Urinary Urgency?

I have been experiencing a feeling of urgency to urinate. After I relieve myself I am fine for a couple hours. It doesn't bother me when I am sleeping but as soon as I wake up and stand I need to go. i thought it was related to my coffee consumption, three halfcups a day,but I didn't have any yesterday and still had symptons today. I have no pain or burning. Thanks.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
It looks like you are suffering interstitial cystitis, a condition when bladder become inflamed and irritated.
The diagnosis of IC is made by ruling out other conditions that cause similar symptoms, such as urinary tract infections, vaginal infections, kidney stones, and cancer.
You are right that say coffee makes it becauses some food like tomatoes, citrus fruits, coffee, chocolate, or alcohol, may worsen symptoms of IC for some people. To identify which foods, if any, irritate your bladder, keep a diary of what you eat during the day.
Treatement is done by Pentosan polysulfate sodium (Elmiron) that works for interstitial cystitis. But, this medication doesn't work for everyone, and it can take several months to take effect. Other medications used to treat IC include the antihistamine hydroxyzine (Vistaril, Atarax), and the tricyclic antidepressant amitriptyline (Elavil). Sometimes, seizure medicines such as gabapentin, (Neurontin) and topiramate (Topamax) are used.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
