What Causes Urinary Retention?
What are the possible causes of urine that will not flow out of a male naturally ? Why is a catheter inserted in the bladder....does that mean that the ureters above the bladder are OK but that the ureters descending from the bladder to the urethra are blocked ?

Urinary retention is the body’s inability to completely empty the bladder which can be either acute or chronic.
It can be due to two causes either obstruction or non-obstruction.
Obstructive urinary retention causes include Enlarged prostate, urethral stricture, kidney or bladder stones, certain tumors, and cancers.
Non-obstructive causes include Stroke, pelvic injury or trauma, impaired muscle or nerve function due to medication or anesthesia or accidents that injure the brain or spinal cord.
Usually, a urinary catheter is inserted to drain the urine if there's an obstruction below the level of the urinary bladder. However, sometimes catheter is also inserted in cases of non-obstructive causes such as stroke or injury to the spinal cord as well.
