What Causes Upper Chest Pain And Taste Of Sulfur That Causes Nausea?

I am a 43 yr old female with a hx of GERD. I do currently take prilosec every day. The past few days I have had upper chest pain, I felt like I had some food that maybe stuck to my tonsils but did not see anything. (I do not have any swallow issues). Know my throat is a little tender, but not like a sore throat. I have a sulfur taste in my mouth. The taste is so bad that it is making me feel nauseated.

Hi, thanks for your question.

I have gone through your queries and i undertand your concerns.

Throat pain and sour taste in the mouth, especially in a patient with GERD, implies reflux layrngitis, a condition in which the acid reflux causes irritation of the larynx which is the upper part of the throat. The acid reflux is also responsible for he upper chest pain.

Here are a few tips to help treat the acid reflux and relieve the symptoms.

1. Use antacids such as gaviscon, 30 minutes after each meal and before bed time.
2. Avoid going to bed within 3 hours of having a meal. This is to allow time for the stomach to be emptied.
3. Avoid eating large portions of meals at a time, eat rather small portions frequently.
4. Avoid spicy and fatty foods.
5. Avoid chocolates, citrus, and coffee.
6. When you lie down , elevate the head of the bed.
7. Quit smoking if you do.
8. Shed weight if you are overweight or obese, because obesity increases the risk and duration of GERD

However, in addition to these tips you should continue with prilosec and these symptoms would resolve in no time.

I hope my answer was helpful. Please feel free to feed me back if you've got more questions.

Best wishes.
