What Causes Unsteadiness And Dizzy Feeling While Having Peripheral Neuropathy And Dementia?

Hello, I am suffering from perepheral neurothrphy and taking 2700 mg daily for it. I also have only one kidney and it is failing. I am 85. And have been tested for dementia, but only have short term memory problems. So what could be causing the feeling of fainting, the unsteadiness, the out of person feeling, and all over illness?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Your unsteadiness is most probably secondary to your peripheral nueropathy. In fact, nerves are necessary for proper gait and posture, in severe nueropathy unsteadiness do occur as due to nueropathy the brain is unaware of the position of out feet.

The treatment of nueropathy would definitely help the unsteadiness so that is one goal of treatment but nueropathy is many times irreversible. In such cases we need to focus on physiotherapy, braces, and modification of home environment to avoid falls. It's not easy but we need to manage it with good care.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman,
