What Causes Transposition Of The Arteries By Birth?

Hi my son was born with transposition of the great arteries and had open heart surgery at 13 days to correct everything. He is now 2 and doing well (with no med's needed). except for a slightly leaky aorta. he is also at risk of endocarditis that can be brought on by infections etc and also his dental care has to be kept up to date. he is doing well but i am now going back to work and he is starting playgroup in September is it wise to get him some sort of band in case of any emergency that might arise? Thanks. Lucy

Exact reason for the transposition if blood vessels is not known. It is thought to be due to certain drugs taken during pregnancy by the mother, some viral diseases contacted by the mother during pregnancy, exposure to nuclear radiations, x rays etc. can cause teratogenic defects.
