What Causes Tiredness In An Elderly Person?

Hi, my father is 87 and has always been very thin but very active, played golf until a couple of years ago and has gone out for walks every day. Around christmas he got a cold and since then has not receovered his appetite or his strength. He is now skeletal, is hardly eating and has absolutely no strength or energy, he sits is a chair all day and the smallest job is tiring. He thinks he's not going to recover and this is the end. What can we do to start to give him some energy back, if he gets a flickering of feeling better the rest may follow as his mental state will improve
