What Causes Tingling Sensation In The Thumb?

My daughter was diagnosed with a strained thumb that she injured on Sunday. They put her in a brace however it is removable. She Is complaining that her thumb is tingling like pins and needles and has been since lunchtime and will not go away. Is this something I need to take her in for tonight?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for your query.
Yes, I think it should be taken care of right away.

It is possible that the brace is too tight /not applied /reapplied properly, or the injury has caused swelling to compress the nerves.

*is there any change in the colour of the thumb?
*any local temperature difference on the thumb?

I recommend :
-an orthopedic consult
-local neurological exam of the affected hand and arm..
-Xray to rule out fractures (if clinically indicated)

Based on this we can initiate a treatment.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Wish you good health
