What Causes Tingling Sensation In Ears And Pain In Back Of Head?

Have have had nerve tingling in ears occasionally, headaches that feel like the back of my head is being pushed against a hard surface and have been staggering (worse when tired) for months. Neurologist gave me gabapentin, then increased it, but no diagnosis has been given. Do you have an idea or suggestion?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You are suffering from tingling sensation in the ears and pain in the back of the head. Tingling sensation in the ears is caused commonly due to ear infection, diabetes, middle ear infection, earwax blockage, eustachian tube dysfunction, etc. Get examined by an ENT specialist, in case of infection a regimen of antibiotics is given to combat the issue.

If there is wax or obstruction your treating doctor will remove it with the help of a curet, suction or a water pick for flushing out unwanted material. Get treated at the earliest. Pain in the back of the head is due to cluster headache. It is treated with triptans, steroids (if needed), sometimes, nerve blockers are given. Other medical conditions that may cause pain in the back of the head are cervicogenic headache, whiplash, pinched nerve, TMJ, etc. Get clinically assessed and get treated at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
